A fictional story can still touch something completely real. For a while, the characters, their losses and their emotions became close enough to feel personal.

The tear came while watching a sad film, when the distance between the screen and the viewer briefly disappeared. Nothing had happened in real life, yet the emotion was genuine — carried by empathy, imagination and recognition.
