How do tears turn into art?

In 2015, Maurice Mikkers presented Imaginarium of Tears at TEDxAmsterdam, showing how an intimate human moment can move through microscopy and photography into an image, an artwork and a shared story.

The talk follows the project from a simple question — what does a tear look like under the microscope? — through collection, crystallization and photographic documentation. It also explains why the images became most meaningful when they remained connected to the people, moments and stories from which the tears originated.

TEDxAmsterdam brought that experiment into a public setting. Following the presentation, visitors could contribute tears and encounter the project directly, extending the talk into a live act of collecting and sharing. The recording remains an early document of the ideas that continue to shape Imaginarium of Tears today.
